Willapa Hills Trail
ImageBetween Chehalis and South Bend there is a wonderful recreation opportunity called the Willapa Hills Trail, a rail-to-trail project intended to eventually span from Chehalis, Washington to the City of SouthBend, Washington.  The 56 mile  trail connects with the I-5 corridor to the east and the scenic Pacific Coastal Highway 101 in Pacific County to the west.  A three mile section links the primary waterfront Port facilities and land holdings on the Willapa River between Raymond and SouthBend.

The Port and the City of Raymond will work with the State Parks and Recreation Commission to restore the historic swinging railroad bridge across the South Fork of the Willapa River. This bridge will link the new Willapa River Development with Downtown Raymond.

Quality outdoor recreation is an important component of the Willapa Community for citizens and for visitors and tourism’s contribution to the economy.  Port facilities should be maintained and expanded to support a wide array of recreation, particularly water oriented activities. The Willapa Rivers and Bay are hugely underutilized recreational resources.  The Port supports expanded recreational boating, and water enjoyment activities.  Priority Port recreational projects include:

  •  Willapa River Boating Park
  •  Marine Fuel and Pump-out Stations.
  •  Expanded Marine Services.
  •  Expanded Riverfront Trails.
  •  Restoration of former Burlington Northern Swinging Bridge.
  •  Expanded Recreational Facilities at Airport.
